Gene Hebert

Faculty 1968-1989

Gene L. Hebert was born September 28, 1933, in Norwich, New York, to George and Julia Lyons Hebert, and lived in Eugene from 1945 to 1968, where he attended St. Mary’s High School. A Korean War veteran who joined the Marines at 17, he later worked on a doctorate in romance languages at the University of Oregon before serving on the Colorado Rocky Mountain School faculty from 1968 to 1989 in Carbondale, Colorado. Gene was deeply involved in the school’s outdoor program, helping to lead new student Wilderness orientation and pioneering new routes on Spring Trip in Canyonlands, while also enjoying mountain climbing and hiking in the desert. He embraced the physical work of maintaining the school’s campus and could often be seen in the afternoon driving the school tractor, pushing dirt, moving lumber, and digging ditches, embodying a spirit of adventure and love for hard work that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of CRMS.
