Steve Shanzer

Faculty 1954-79

Steve Shanzer holds the unique distinction of being the only person to appear in every single CRMS catalog since the school’s founding until 1979. Originally hired by the Holdens at age 64 as a retirement job to teach French and German (despite having no formal teaching credentials after losing his documents during a dramatic WWII escape), Steve became instrumental in shaping the school’s culture and activities. He introduced foldboating and jewelry making to students, and when Charlotte Jossman joined to teach languages in the school’s second year, Steve was able to expand his jewelry program. Many alumni remember him as an enthusiastic boating instructor who never missed a Spring Trip, and he was the pioneering force behind CRMS’s boating program, using his traditional Austrian foldboats made of wood and rubberized canvas even as later faculty members introduced more modern fiberglass boats and advanced techniques. Beyond his formal teaching duties, Steve became a beloved storyteller who would captivate crowds of students and faculty in the lounge during Interim with tales of his extraordinary life experiences, often accompanied by his famous Viennese pastries, and he continues to teach jewelry making to both students and faculty while occasionally baking his wonderful Austrian Linzer Torte.
