CRMS is proud of its international student diversity and welcomes all international students to apply for admission. With 15% of the student body coming from approximately 12-14 countries each year, CRMS truly is a global community. Learn more about the application process for international students below.
Application for International Students
International students complete the same application
for admission as domestic students. CRMS accepts several different applications, including the CRMS Application, the Gateway Application and the SSAT Standard Application Online (SAO).
Applications are due on February 1st
for priority consideration. Applications submitted after this date will be considered on a rolling basis.
International applicants are required to submit testing which demonstrates English language proficiency. Students can take either the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Students who are candidates for the ESL program are not
required to take the SSAT, only the TOEFL. Students wishing to place out of the ESL program typically score above a 90 on the TOEFL iBT and are required to take the SSAT. All scores should be forwarded directly to Colorado Rocky Mountain School.
- SSAT: Visit their website to register or call (609) 683-4440. The Colorado Rocky Mountain School code is 2506.
- TOEFL: Visit their website or call (877) 863-3546 or (609) 951-1100. CRMS does offer intermediate and advanced ESL (English as a Second Language). Admitted students typically score above 70 (out of 120) on the internet-based test. Admitted students who wish to place out of ESL typically score above 90 (out of 120). The Colorado Rocky Mountain School code is 6782.
International students must also have an interview with an admission officer. If an in-person interview is not possible, a telephone or Skype interview can be arranged by contacting the Admission Office
Acquiring a Visa
Once enrolled, international students will receive an I-20 form from the Admission Office in order to obtain an F-1 student visa from the U.S. Embassy in their home country.
International Student Program
All new international students begin the school year with an orientation program before the new student Wilderness Orientation backpacking trip. During the new international student orientation, students and parents are provided an opportunity to acclimatize both to CRMS’ altitude and to the school’s culture. The students are supported in their preparations for Wilderness with gear consultation, packing tips, and a short hike up Red Hill. During the orientation week, students will meet their advisors, get a taste of the CRMS active program and work crews, tour campus, take English placement assessments, shop for dormitory supplies, socialize with their peers, and get to know the greater Roaring Fork Valley. When the students return from their 10-day Wilderness trips, they begin the academic year, and they will meet their new roommates and dormitory peers.
Once the students settle into their daily life at school and begin their coursework, they continue to find support from the International Student Program. The program offers intermediate and advanced/integrated ESOL courses
, TOEFL test preparation and transportation to test locations, special international student outings and weekend programming, assistance with travel plans, and on-campus cultural events. Katie Hyman
is the director of the International Student Program and is available to support and celebrate international students at CRMS.
