Eliot Taft

English Faculty

BA, English & Environmental Studies, Bowdoin College

Appointed 2019

What do you do on campus?
I teach English, and I like to dip my toes in mountain biking, whitewater kayaking, soccer, and snowboarding programs as well.

What is your favorite part of being an advisor?
I have recently gotten into playing frisbee golf with my advisees, and it’s exciting to compete and ultimately lose to such worthy opponents. It’s also great to celebrate together the many victories and successes in a school year – from academic awards to watching an advisee score a goal or climb a tough route, it’s an amazing relationship to have in such a tight-knit community.

What is your favorite book to teach and why?
In my American Literature class, we recently read There There by Tommy Orange. I’ve never seen a work of fiction allow for students to so eagerly dissect a text and create space for challenging questions on how the traumas of the past take shape in the present.

Describe your teaching philosophy in one sentence.
To use stories and other writings to inspire and prepare students to take on a world that is in desperate need of healing
