Samuel Kaufman ’11 in Five Minutes

by Heath Hignight

Hometown:  Aspen, Colorado
Residing in: Los Angeles, California
Education:   BFA, Fine Art/Studio Art, Cooper Union; M. Architecture, Southern California Institute of Architecture
Occupation: Architectural Designer at MILLIØNS

What have you been up to since graduating from CRMS in 2011?
Funny enough, I’m actually animating computer-generated scenes for Millions. Since graduating from art school, I’m gravitating towards more computational ways of making images and objects. From Staubli robot drawings to CNC milled plaster molds for ceramic slip-casts, I experiment with fabrication processes that balance material and machine.

What are some of your interests?
My love for being in nature has persisted even after living in cities for nine years. I make an effort to get outside, get into Wilderness, whenever the weather and timing is right.

When was the last time you visited CRMS?
Every time I’m in the valley I drive by CRMS!

A favorite memory of a CRMS faculty or classmate?
My favorite memory is going to the Adobe for Khara Gaw’s oil painting class. Taking off winter shoes and standing on the heated floor, painting vegetables from the garden, it’s one of my fondest memories from high school. Khara is such an amazing teacher and a continual source of inspiration to me.
