Humanities at Colorado Rocky Mountain School are meant to inspire the heart and inform the mind. Beginning freshman year, the stance of the Humanities Department is that of a quest in which students are journeymen of sorts, moving through the literature, history, language, and
ideals towards a greater (and more expansive) understanding of one’s self and one’s place in the ever-evolving global landscape. Hence, attainment of this quest is ongoing and links each class and each grade with its emphasis on student inquiry and project-based learning. The humanities themselves are a “seeking” discipline, constantly asking students to ponder and analyze levels of greater meaning and larger significance, always tracking each inquiry back to these fundamental questions; “Why does this story, this event, this dynamic language matter?” And, even more so, “Why does this matter to me?” With such transformative questions in mind, teachers help guide students toward meaningful answers, knowing that they exist, knowing that their impact reaches far beyond the CRMS experience itself.
