What to Bring
Student Supplies
AcademicParents with a student attending Colorado Rocky Mountain School for the first time often wonder what students need for their academic classes when they arrive. Below is a brief list of supplies suggested by our current freshmen. Students may also purchase items at the CRMS Bookstore or ride a CRMS bus to Glenwood to purchase supplies at a later date.
Supplies – label with student name
- Five 1-inch binders or two 2½ inch binders
- Five paper folders with sleeves or two paper folders with sleeves – depending on how many binders you choose
- Dividers
- A dozen #2 pencils
- Non-toxic highlighters
- Graph paper
- Ruler
- 3-ring hole punch which fits in 3-ring binder
- A laptop is strongly recommender
- A word processor and spread sheet program of some type
- Graphing calculator
- Bike lock
As part of our outdoor program and introduction to Colorado Rocky Mountain School, we conduct a ten-day Wilderness Orientation designed to introduce students to the philosophy of CRMS. New students will undertake a backpacking expedition in the wilderness areas surrounding the school. All new students must attend this session.
Checklist of Required Equipment for CRMS Wilderness Trips
Below is a list of required items that includes all you will need for the Wilderness Session and many other outdoor trips. The school will provide all other equipment. Extra clothes just mean extra weight, so leave them behind. You will need additional room in your pack for group food and equipment (approximately 15-20 lbs).
- Sturdy boots in good repair (waterproofed)
- Internal (preferred) or External frame pack with waistband (65-75 lb. capacity)
- Sleeping bag with stuff sack, preferably fiberfill (rated to approx. +10°F)
- Ensolite or Thermarest sleeping pad
- 6’ x 9’ ground tarp (preferably with corner grommets)
- Insulated jacket or wool sweater
- Long pants (synthetic or fleece)
- Long underwear top and bottom (not cotton!)
- Long-sleeved shirt or heavyweight long underwear (synthetic or fleece)
- Waterproof rain jacket
- Waterproof rain pants
- T-shirts (2)
- Underwear (2-3 pairs)
- Nylon shorts (1 pair)
- Lightweight shoes (closed-toe shoes, no Tevas or flip-flops)
- Lightweight synthetic liner socks (2 pairs)
- Wool or synthetic hiking socks (2 pairs)
- Hat that covers ears (wool or synthetic)
- Gloves or mittens
- Sun hat with visor
- Leather work gloves (for service project)
- 1-quart water bottles (2) (Nalgene or other Lexan bottles are best)
- Cup (plastic, insulated, 12-16 oz), bowl, spoon
- Bandannas (2)
- Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
- Small- or medium-sized stuff sacks to organize your equipment (2)
- Toilet kit (with toothbrush and moleskin)
- Sunscreen and lip protection (15+ SPF)
- Sunglasses (with plastic lenses)
- Whistle with neck lanyard
- Potable Agua (water purification tablets)
- Pen or pencils (for journal-writing; journals provided by CRMS)
- Small, lightweight day pack (or convertible waist pack from backpack)
- Gaitors (to keep debris out of boots)
- Camera with extra batteries
- Camp chair or Crazy Creek chair (lightweight)
- Book (small or lightweight)
- Feminine hygiene items
- Prescription glasses or extra contacts
