Slopeside Level 1 Avalanche Training

In this interim we had Brian McCall, our local Colorado Avalanche Information Center forecaster, help us learn how to travel in and around avalanche terrain. We gained insight into decision- making strategies, developed crucial planning and travel techniques, comprehensive rescue skills, and learned about the human factors involved in avalanches. We spent the first two days in and near town splitting our time between classroom instruction and backcountry skiing. We then headed into Vance's Hut for two nights and three days to put our new skills into practice. Our classroom work was scientific in nature. This interim was a fun combination of working out our intellects and bodies and celebrating the fact that we live in the Rockies!
