Everglades

Everglades means river of grass. This river happens to be about a hundred miles wide and runs under the entire southern third of the Florida Peninsula. Marked by four distinct ecosystems, Saw grass prairie, Pine hammock, Mangrove estuary, and the Florida Bay, the Everglades is unique and the largest national park east of the Mississippi. The biodiversity that is promoted by relatively warm dry winters, (it was between 65 and 85 in March during our visit), and has extremely hot wet summers. We canoed through this unique environment. Camped on white sand beaches, chickees - platforms over the water, or right in our canoes. We learned about the rich human history and the threats that face this environment. The Everglades are truly a stunning ecosystem!
