Achieving New Heights

Climbing

Ever climbed a desert crack in Indian Creek? Fallen off the overhanging limestone sport routes in Rifle Mountain Park? Been so pumped bouldering in Redstone you couldn’t unlace your shoes? CRMS climbing takes you to world-class climbing destinations while keeping you grounded in an engaging school experience. Beginners can learn the basics, intermediates can stretch their skills, and advanced climbers can push their limits. Climbing is more than simply an after-school sport here. It is part of who we are and the way we live. The intensity of the connections developed in climbing is applicable to all parts of the CRMS program.

Where we chalk-up:

We enjoy a wide variety of climbing designations that offer the best possible training options available. From desert-crack climbing in Utah to the world-class sport climbing area of Rifle to the massive conglomerate boulders of Redstone, CRMS climbers experience firsthand all the different climbing options. Plus, when winter beckons, CRMS climbers head inside and train on set routes and problems on our extensive, competition indoor climbing wall.

How we train:

In all levels of our climbing program, our students are taught all the necessary safety and rope-handling skills to ensure they are well versed and capable in the climbing arena. Once proficient in safety, because we have so many different climbing areas within a day’s reach of school, our student climbers learn all aspects of the sport from bouldering to sport and crack climbing. Plus, they train regularly on our school’s indoor bouldering wall and our competitive team travels throughout the state for competitions.

How our campus gives climbing athletes an edge:

CRMS climbers enjoy their own extensive climbing wall, which was built by students and faculty with help from outside designers. The gym includes a 1500 sq. ft. top-rope and bouldering wall. These walls serve as the site for workouts and competitions and are continually expanding. We share the wall with the Rock and Ice Magazine staff and tap in to their expertise to enrich our programs.

Dedication:

We use afternoons, weekends, and extended trips to teach and challenge climbers of all abilities. CRMS climbers head to the gym or the great outdoors four to five days a week, plus coaches often set up additional weekend climbing sessions and outings that students can participate in at will.

What we offer:

At each level we teach a comprehensive curriculum designed to take students to the next level in their climbing, from beginning to advanced. Beginning climbers to intermediate climbers will learn the basic sport and traditional climbing skills, and advanced climbers will be ready to complete multi-pitch and lead sport routes on their own.

Our competitive team:

We host the Friday Night Bouldering League – a series of five weekend competitions just for CRMS students. These comps routinely draw 30-plus student competitors. The school Climbing Team also competes in the Colorado High School Climbing League. Competitions occur throughout the state and climbers will travel to the Regional and State Championships if they qualify. Last year CRMS finished 4th out of 22 teams at State Championships.

Gear Requirements:

Climbers are welcome to bring their own climbing gear, but CRMS will provide all needed equipment.
