Students’ Vision Sparks New Living Spaces

A student work crew first envisioned a new eco-friendly dorm in 2002-2003 that would add approximately 6,700 square feet of usable accommodations to the campus. Now this dorm is part of the campus master plan and is set to include 10 double-occupancy rooms plus a new faculty apartment. The building will be completed in the summer of 2011.

By utilizing natural light, providing practical storage, and optimizing functional space, the new dorm will provide ideal living for 20 additional students. It will feature a comfortable common room with kitchenette, study alcoves for at least 10 students, two bathrooms plus one fully ADA-accessible bathroom, a year-round storage area for trunks and outdoor gear, open porches, and covered bike storage.

Environmental impact is being taken into account on every aspect of the design and construction. Reclaiming what was an under-utilized site, the building has high-sustainability standards and puts a priority on durable and low-maintenance materials and systems. The dorm adheres to a passive-solar design and thermal envelope, is prepped for active solar hot-water panels, and incorporates many natural, local, and green materials (such as beetle-kill paneling in the common room). The landscaping around the building will also be using low-water and non-potable irrigation. Upon completion, the dorm will undergo a post-construction performance review.
