Scholastic, Adventurous, and Conscientious

Meet CRMS Students

At Colorado Rocky Mountain School, we pursue students whose values, energy, spirit, and passion for ideas mirror our own. We have a diverse student population bridging 11 countries and 24 states together as a community. At Colorado Rocky Mountain School, we value each student’s individual potential and embrace the contributions they can make to our school. Please read below to get to know some of our current students.

Name: Jemima
Homestate (or Country): Colorado
Grade: 11
Boarding or Day Student: Day Student
Favorite subject: Chemistry/Biology
Favorite “Active” activity: Nordic Skiing
Favorite Work Crew: Gardening. Working in the school’s organic
garden is so rewarding because we are planting and harvesting food that we eat in the Bar Fork (school cafeteria).
Interesting things about me: I love to bake pies, read classic literature, and lie in the sun.
Best moment at Colorado Rocky Mountain School so far: My best moments at school have been when I joined the soccer team, climbing team, or Nordic team. The friendships I made on a team last even after the season and the competition is what you make it; you are there to have fun.
What made you choose Colorado Rocky Mountain School?: My great-grandmother and her son both taught at CRMS, and both my mom and brother went as students to CRMS. Growing up, I went to summer camps on campus and I've wanted to be here for high school since 2nd grade. For some reason the smell of the hallways reminds me of my great-grandmother's house!
Most challenging experience/class/assignment thus far: For me the most challenging experiences at CRMS have been this past year, my junior year. The academic program here is really challenging – especially in the 11th grade year when we have to write a big term paper. Having the teachers live on campus and be so accessible has been really helpful in managing my work.
Favorite food at the Bar Fork Dining Hall: I have a sweet tooth so my favorite food would have to be the chocolate marshmallow pecan bars, they are so good.
In my spare time...: I read, and hang out with friends on campus, which generally means sitting outside in the sun talking, or in winter sipping hot chocoate in the Bar Fork.
Favorite on-campus activity: The climbing competitions are great because our gym can hold so many people. I am also a fan of the “Make Your Own Milkshake” nights on the weekends!
Where I see myself after graduation:
I plan on going to college; I am in the process of looking and choosing colleges, but I want to study chemistry and biology and go into a pre-med program. I would like to become a doctor and work with the program Doctors Without Borders.
Advice for kids considering Colorado Rocky Mountain School: If you are looking for a place that is beautiful and full of adventure and fun, come to CRMS. Be prepared for some hard work, both physical and mental, and a small community where you know everyone.

Name: Katarina
Homestate (or Country):
Chicago, Illinois
Grade:
11
Boarding or Day Student:
Boarding student.
Favorite subject:
English
Favorite “Active” activity:
Mountain Biking
Favorite Work crew:
Technology Work crew
Interesting things about me:
I absolutely love writing science-fiction/fantasy stories.
Future goals:
As cliché as it sounds, I just want to be happy.
Best moment at Colorado Rocky Mountain School
so far:
I had been transporting a large amount of wooden horses from a shed to our gym to be given to less fortunate children with the help of Eric, a teacher on campus, and as we were driving along we heard a sudden thud. Looking back we saw the head of the wooden horse on the side of the road and its body just next to it. I remember scrambling around trying to glue it back together as Eric cracked a few a jokes as usual. I laughed so hard as I shuffled around frantically, contemplating if I should just hide the horse in the back of a closet.
What made you choose Colorado Rocky Mountain School?: I adored the location of the school, being right in the middle of the mountains, and when I visited everyone seemed know everyone else; it was the kind of closeness I was really looking for, I had grown so tired of the stiff, monotonous routine of a large public high school.
Most challenging experience/class/assignment thus far: This school has given me the chance to realize it's all right to not be good at some things and you need to practice to get better at anything. Sometimes I don't want to try something so I don't fail at it but I'm starting realize there is never success without failure.
Favorite food at the Barfork Dining Hall: GRILLED CHEESE!
In my spare time...: I love going for walks or going mountain biking. Chicago lacks the natural beautiful surroundings that Colorado offers.
Favorite on-campus activity: Using my tech skills to fix fellow students' computers.
I Never thought I’d…: See the things I've seen here. Wilderness was an amazing experience and as I walked through the mountains I felt like I was in a Lord of the Rings movie. When I show my friends from home pictures of what I've done and all the trips I've been on they always shoot me a look of jealousy.
Advice for kids considering Colorado Rocky Mountain School: I was really nervous about coming to this school, I wasn't sure if I would like having to do all of these outdoor activities, and I was worried I would get really sick of my friends because I would see them all the time but it's not the case. CRMS has such a broad range of things to do there's something for everyone here. As for my friends, sure I may want my space sometimes as I would in any family environment like this, but there's plenty of land to roam to get some alone time. I'm really glad I came to this school. My only regret is that I didn't find it two years earlier.

Name: Juan Pablo
Homestate (or Country): Mexico
Grade:
11
Boarding or Day Student: Boarding
Favorite subject: Environmental Science with Jim Gaw
Favorite “Active” activity: Telemark Skiing
Favorite Work Crew: My favorite work crew was Riverwatch. We worked with the Colorado Riverwatch Program to test the water from the Crystal River (which flows through our campus). I enjoyed this crew because it was a very real application of what I have been learning in my environmental science class about river ecology.
Something interesting about me: My younger brother will join me at CRMS next year as a freshman.
Best moment at Colorado Rocky Mountain School so far: The outdoor program is so amazing. I have really loved all of the trips I have done – starting with Wilderness Orientation my first year.
What made you chose Colorado Rocky Mountain School?: I chose CRMS because of the sports offerings. I was amazed that you could ski four days a week and was also impressed when I saw the school's climbing wall that students help build.
Most challenging experience/class/assignment thus far: Being a boarding student was challenging at first because I hadn’t lived away from home before I came here. Since arriving here, I realize how valuable it is to live with your friends and teachers. I not only love the sports programs here, but I am benefitting from the structure of evening study and am more focused with my classes.
Favorite food at the Bar Fork Dining Hall: Fiona (our head chef) makes the best spaghetti!
Favorite on-campus activity: On the weekends, I play indoor soccer with my friends. There is an indoor soccer club that was started by students.
